I am new to C Scows, I am interested in getting into one, and have a good line on a cheap one. but it is older. it has a wooden mast. How much should i care about that. I will not likely race it much. but may want to go that way later. I just dont know enough about them.

thanks

thanks
Dave

Is it a fiberglass hull or wood? If it is wood it is a classic.

We have had several of the older boats in our area with wood spars, both people got them for free. A wood spar will not be competitive even in local fleet racing. Also with it being older the spar fittings need to be checked out, plus look for any weakness in the spar due to damage, dry rot or stress. Some of the older boats do not have radial vangs. Strongly recommend having one.

There are many older boats in the mid to early 80's and even in the late 70's that would be less work and maintainance and would have aluminum masts. Many of the later wood hulls had aluminum masts or were upgraded to one in the late 60's early 70's.
