The 2018 ILYA C Invitational Storyline
by Andrew Bohl (B 23)
Despite the sub par weather, 35 boats made the trek to Beulah for the ILYA C Invitational. The forecast was showing rain and medium-to-heavy breeze out of the decidedly WRONG direction for Beulah (the North). Boats were given difficult decisions to make about which sail to use and whether or not to take a third throughout the regatta.
Race 1 on Saturday morning was won by B-1 Will Haeger, coming in just ahead of his dad who was 2nd. It appeared there was going to be quite the duel in the 2nd race between distant relatives OO-99 Dave Keck and B-25 Joe Byrnes, but Joe couldn’t keep it upright around an offset and Dave won in a landslide. The racers then went in for lunch. Race 3 brought more of the up and down breeze and shifty winds and was won by B-18 Brian and Kevin Brickler, no third necessary.
The sailors were treated to a phenomenal dinner by Craig Parker and Doug Carstens including steak, sausage mac and cheese, and scallops! Rumor has it the party and after-party made it into the wee hours of the morning.
Sunday morning was overcast and misting, with the rain picking up intermittently. Race 4 was again won by B-1 Will Haeger, giving him a sizable lead going to into race 5. For the final race of the regatta the judges took the sailors to a new part of the lake. The biggest benefit of this was to put the fabled Buck Island in play for the boldest of racers. Approximately a third of the fleet braved the “Beulah Straights” and sailed between the island and shore at one point or another to varying success. OO-824 Dave Harris held off a strong charge from eventual Top Junior Scotty Sullivan (B-19) to win Race 5.
Will Haeger had his only finish outside outside of the top 4 (a 9th) which was plenty to hold onto his lead and the crown! Congrats to him, crew “Real” Brad Roble, and third Rachel Beers. B-18 Brian and Kevin Brickler, B-12 Kent Haeger and Mike Greeson, E-55 Scott and Greg Tarman, and OO-99 Dave Keck and Bill Harvat rounded out the top 5.
A huge thank you to the Lake Beulah Yacht Club for hosting and MAJOR kudos to the judging team headed by Larry Krause for getting in 5 races in challenging (see: Beulah) conditions!
