Steve Schmidt Wins ILYA Two Years Straight

Oshkosh yacht club threw an amazing four day event with over 100 boats in 4 fleets Thursday-Sunday this past week. The new format of the regatta allowed all the fleets to socialize together and for sailors to have half days of sailing in their fleets, or to have full days of sailing in multiple fleets. The C fleet had 43 boats registered and started Thursday morning with one race. After the fleet struggled to get a good start with the first race (2 postponements, 2 general recalls, and a Z flag), the time didn’t allow for a second race. The first race was light air allowing Andy and Mya Burdick to sail with 2 instead of the usual 4.

After a relaxing afternoon, a bilge puller dinner with a new class, and a relaxing morning, the sailors headed back onto the water Friday afternoon for two races. The wind did not cooperate immediately leading to a postponement. After about an hour of waiting for wind, the breeze filled in nicely and two races were sailed.

Junior sailor Ryan Grosch (N-47) won the first race. This year’s national champion took race number three to finish the day’s racing. The sailors went in for a perch fish fry followed by a karaoke contest and lots of dancing. Saturday morning sailors were greeted by the first heavy air of the regatta with many sailors taking thirds. It was a fight at the top of the fleet at the end of race 1 with John Porter, Andy Burdick, Matt Prange, Steve Schmidt, and Steve Avery all changing positions right until the finish. John Porter won race number 4. Race 5 was sailed immediately following race 4. The wind was heavy at the start of the race Scotty Sullivan sailing the B-19 got off to a commanding lead. As the race continued the velocity dropped. The B-19 led for two laps until Andy Burdick with Mya, Finn, and Gloria Tornehl passed them in the last leg. Sailors went to the Waters for an island themed party with great food and an awesome local band.

The last day brought heavy breezes out of the northeast. This caused huge waves and the PRO asked for a fleet decision about whether or not to sail. The ILYA fleet representative went out on the water and decided the wavelength was very difficult for a c scow so the final race was called off. Sailors packed up their boats and some stayed to watch an iconic last A scow race while others headed home.

In the end Steve Schmidt reigned champion for the second year in a row.
